MicroSlice™-based Servers Improve Price/Performance for Cloud Computing and Web-based Environments by over 50%
The MicroSlice Revolution
Rackable’s MicroSlice architecture enables the smallest server foot print ever introduced by Rackable Systems, supporting up to 264 servers while drawing as few as 72 Watts per server. MicroSlice eliminates the need for expensive third party virtualization and management software through "physicalization," a revolutionary, hardware-based approach to virtualization which further improves the total cost of ownership equation.
MicroSlice establishes a dramatic new, server price point while delivering the performance and server class features required by Cloud Computing and Web-based environments. This 80% per-server cost reduction yields a 51% improvement in price/performance — a welcomed relief for many IT departments struggling to scale their infrastructures despite reduced CapEx and OpEx budgets.
Physicalization – Hardware-based Virtualization: No Software Required
While traditional virtualization schemes rely on sometimes very expensive third party software to divide compute resources into numbers of independent virtual machines, physicalization takes a hardware-based approach to dividing those resources into independent, TCO-optimized, single socket compute nodes to better suit the needs of cost-conscious web hosting and cloud computing installations.
MicroSlice Architecture Key Benefits:
- Quantum leap advancement in Price/Performance over standard dual socket server configurations
- Smashes the sub $500 price per node threshold
- Cost-effective scaling (up to six mini-ITX boards or three micro-ATX boards per CloudRack tray with six 2.5" drives)
- 80% lower cost per server node with lower cost and lower power single socket nodes
- Eco-Logical™ design – undisputed price/performance per watt leadership with ultra high efficiency power supplies and 12V base board power distribution
- Increased server densities by combining desktop-derived components with advanced server features like ECC memory & remote management capabilities
- Advanced server-class features like ECC memory and remote server management capabilities
- Superior, build-to-order configuration flexibility and component choice – the latest AMD boards and processors available in multiple chassis, tray configurations and cabinet enclosures, tailored to specific customer requirements
New MicroSlice-based Servers
Four new MicroSlice-based servers are available in CloudRack tray and half-depth server configurations. Leveraging the latest, high-density AMD board designs, these new servers support AMD’s dual core Athlon™ and tri or quad core Phenom™ processors. All of these products support Rackable’s Roamer advanced server management module and benefit from ultra high efficiency power supplies.
